Adaptation

Prepare for impacts associated with a changing climate and more extreme weather events. Direct resources to the most vulnerable populations that are affected by climate issues.

We are helping our communities prepare by:

  • Planning growth to minimize exposure to fire, flood, drought and severe weather events
  • Promoting flood and wildfire preparedness to reduce risk
  • Designing infrastructure that is resilient to extreme weather conditions
  • Strengthening local food systems and promoting sustainable agriculture
  • Conserving water and protecting water quality
  • Addressing health impacts related to climate change, specifically among low income households

Projects

  • Wildfire Smoke and Health – With a warming climate resulting in increases in wildfires, Climate Smart Glacier Country is addressing the health impacts of wildfire smoke through community partnerships. This includes distributing air filters to low-income vulnerable populations, working with Montana Dept. of Public Health and Human Services to create clean air centers, and establishing a pilot program to create clean air classrooms for young children (see Wildfire and Health overview)

  • Flood Preparedness – Climate change results in an increase in the intensity and frequency of severe weather events that lead to flooding. Climate Smart Glacier Country is working with county and state government officials to adopt new strategies to improve flood readiness. This includes increasing awareness through events such as the film screening of “One in Five Hundred,” working to lower flood insurance rates through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS), and supporting best practices for emergency alter systems and other flood preparedness activities.

  • Community Conversations – Promoted dialog on adaptation topics through presentations to community groups, outreach efforts related to the Whitefish Climate Action Plan, and workshops on best practices for FireSafe communities.
